Packing list for Gorilla Tracking
Gorilla tracking is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that you should do, however, to make it even more memorable you need to have the right packing list so that the adventure is complete and the the right partners to be your guide. Packing list
- Refillable drinking water bottle. Since you will be out walking a lot in nature, you need the right amount of water to keep you hydrated. In line with the tourism sustainability principles, you are encouraged to carry refillable water bottles so that you leave the home of the Gorillas in the same state you found it.
- Face masks and hand sanitizer. We share more than 90% of our DNA with gorillas which makes them vulnerable to communicable diseases you may be having. To Protect the gorillas you are required to have a face mask on only when approaching the gorillas but not when trekking through the forest and a hand sanitizer.
- A pair of hiking gloves. While trekking in the forest, there are no designated path ways so in search for a way one might hold onto thorny branches, in that regard you are encouraged to have hiking gloves on just in case you need to hold onto any branches, they would also protect you from insect bits and touch in soil.
- A lightweight pair of waterproof hiking boots. The Forest has got streams and rivers that you will need to cross from time to time while following the trail of the gorillas and it can rain any time. Don’t forget you will do some hiking because Bwindi impenetrable forest is located in a hilly area therefore you need the right pair of shoes for the adventure
- A decent light waterproof jacket. The weather can change at any time and it can rain at any time.
- Energy-giving snacks. You will be required to have a packed lunch before departing from the lodge because you don’t know for how long you will be in the forest. That is why we encourage you to have some energy-giving snacks too
- A tin of insect repellent. The jungle has got lots of inhabitants and some of these are insects. Please carry insect repellent.
- A pair of trousers, a long-sleeved shirt (t-shirt), and long socks. Bwindi impenetrable forest is a jungle and the rangers will have to cut their way through while following the path of the Gorillas. Your body needs to be fully covered and protected from possible injuries that may arise from scratches
- Waterproof backpack. Remember you may be carrying items that can be spoilt if they get in contact with water. You need to get them protected
- Trekking poles to give you support while you hike the jungles of Bwindi. These are provided at times by the safari lodges where you will be staying and a hiking staff who you will hire from Uganda Wildlife Authority at the briefing point.
- Biodegradable tissue or toilet paper. In the event that you need to use a bush toilet. We need to protect the environment by using biodegradable materials
- Hiking Gaiters, These will serve have the basic purpose of keeping stuff out of your boots.
- Money to pay porters and to tip– Tourists are always encouraged to hire one or two porters to help you through the trekking of the Jungle. Porters are residents in the communities around or in the park, providing portaging services is one way for them to earn a living and also encourages them to not get involved in poaching
